Hole by Hole Description

The Rougham

Tricky par 5 opening Hole. Water hazard 270 yards out from medal tee. Tee shot played to right side of fairway will kick forward down bank, but anything too far right will get caught up in semi rough, leaving awkward stance for second. Second shot best played to bottom of hill over second water hazard, leaving short iron to green. Green is further away than it looks when playing approach and make sure you miss the blind bunker short right.

Burn Side

Short par 4, dogleg right that demands respect. Anything too far right from tee will be blocked out by high trees. Long iron from tee is safest play but leaves longer approach. Make sure you get onto the correct level of the two-tier green or a three-putt becomes a real possibility. The brave may try and drive the green from the tee.

Tipheid

Straight par 4 uphill. Water hazard right and trees left leaves the middle of the fairway as the best option. A good tee shot will leave a short iron in, but anything struck away from the flag will leave a tricky approach putt on this sloping green.Watch for a mis-club on the approach since bunkers short right and left will catch you.

Hagshaw

Long par 4. Straight hole, but out-of-bounds down left suggests hole should be played with caution. Small green demands accurate approach that is likely to be played with a long club. Anything missing the green left, right or long leaves a tricky up-and-down. Prevailing headwind can turn this hole into an effective three-shotter.

Glaikhead

Medium par 4. Take care with club choice for tee shot, as there is a water hazard at 230 yards out. A good drive will leave a blind second up hill, with only the marker post at the rear of the green for guidance. Missing the green is not too disastrous here so par is always a good possibility.

Poniel's View

Tricky par 3. Only the top of the flag can be seen from the tee, which makes both club selection and choice of line tricky. Avoid missing long and/or left at all costs.

Warlaw

Reasonable par 5 if you find the fairway with your tee-shot. Get as close to the green as you can with your second, since an approach played with anything more than a medium iron makes the green difficult to hold. Land the ball short and you may even shoot through the back. Trouble lurks long and right of the green.

Forkins

Shortish par 4. Lateral water hazard down left to be avoided, but don't push your tee-shot right or you'll be blocked-out by high trees for your second. Deep green that is always one club further away than it looks.

Nethan

Long par 4. Avoid going left off the tee. Mid-iron approach to small green rounds-off the outward nine.

Neuck

Tricky par 3 to semi-blind green. Most play to land their tee-shot on the down-slope 20 yards short and allow the golf ball to feed down to the green. However, anything shooting forwards with real pace is sure to find the bunker behind the green. Even being safely on the green is no guaranteed par, the severe slopes require your full concentration.

Bankend

Cunning par 4 requires an accurately placed tee shot up the right half of the fairway. Anything left is sure to feed down to the left semi-rough and leave an awkward "hooking" lie for the approach. The green is a fairly generous target but missing long and left is to be avoided at all costs. Treat the putting with maximum respect, as there are some unusual breaks on this green. Be pleased with your par!

Brae Side

Daunting tee shot needs to be played directly over the large trees. Further left cuts the dogleg, but a hook off this tee is real danger. Once on the fairway you'll have a short iron approach to a deep green that slopes beyond belief. If anything, err short on your approach to leave an uphill putt, but don't miss left, long or right as all of these leave a very tricky up-and-down for par.

Curling Haugh

Easiest of the short holes but still no pushover. The two bunkers are well-short of the green, but don't appear this way from the tee. The bunker long and right can be a tricky par-save owing to its steep faces.

The Buss

Short par 4 with a couple of options from the tee. Go for the green or lay up with a mid or long iron. A burn crossing the fairway at 230 yards out is the main danger for the brave option, but find the green and you may well be rewarded with a birdie.

Auchlochan

Blind fairway from the tee. Aim your tee-shot at the electricity pylon on the hillside in the background. A tee shot hit left will be blocked-out by high trees for the approach, whereas a shot hit too far right may tangle with large oak trees. Not a tee-shot for the faint-hearted! Once you've found the fairway it's a straightforward pitch to the green.

The Trows

Par 5 from the medal tees. Blind tee shot over the mound to a generous fairway. Approach shot plays uphill all the way to a two-tier green that breaks far more than it appears. Missing the green long or left leaves a very tricky up-and-down. Be delighted with a four!

Knoweknack

Short par 4 that can be either driven or play a lay-up short of the burn and a pitch on. Two bunkers guard the front of the green but this hole's main defence is the green itself. If you have a downhill putt take a deep breath beforehand!

Hame

Tough finishing hole that offers no respite. A burn at 220 yards out can either be driven over or laid-up short of. Beware of "opening your shoulders" on the tee-shot, though, as the first fairway on your right is out-of-bounds when playing the eighteenth. If you lay-up short of the burn you'll have over 200 yards to the green and on your second shot out-of-bounds left comes in to play also. This hole has ruined many a worthy scorecard so the best advice is to treat it with caution.
